How to restart your streak after a slip
Almost everyone who changes a habit has a day that doesn't go to plan. A slip can feel like it erases everything, but the days you already did still happened, and so did what you learned from them. Here's a calm way to get going again.
Please note: Kind Streak trackers are self-help tools, not medical advice or treatment. If you drink heavily every day, talk to a doctor before stopping, because alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous. 1. Don't let one day become a week
The biggest risk after a slip is the "I've already blown it" feeling that turns one day into several. Decide that tomorrow (or even the rest of today) is a normal day on your plan again.
2. Write down what happened, briefly
Skip the guilt and note the facts: what time it was, where you were, who you were with, and how you felt just before. Two or three lines is enough. Patterns show up quickly, for example "always after a stressful call" or "late at night, alone, scrolling."
3. Change one thing about that situation
Pick one small change for next time: a different route home, a plan for that party, a phone charging outside the bedroom, a drink you like that isn't alcohol. Small, specific changes work better than big promises.
4. Restart your tracker, and keep your total
Start a new streak, but also keep a running count of total good days. "41 of the last 45 days" is a truer picture of your progress than "day 1." A printable tracker or the free online streak tracker (it saves only on your device) makes both easy to see.
5. Tell someone, or get support
Telling one person you trust takes away a lot of the shame. If slips keep happening, or the habit is affecting your health, money or relationships, that's a good time to talk to a doctor or a free helpline. See our get help page.
